Sokina’s parents are always grateful for the help we have given them and their family over the years. Their grandchild Shatti, holding my hand, is also now sponsored by Asha for school.
Here we are handing out warm blankets to Akhi’s family and neighbours. They all live in very poor homes where there is no gas, electricity or water
Ladies practising their Bangla alphabet today. The official name for this group has now become Mohilara Paren – ‘Ladies Can Do It’ in English! We are also having meetings for them to share their problems and find solutions together. These ladies need more than just literacy, they need to strengthen and help one another to deal with some of the common problems of life in Bangladesh.
This is Akhi. She is 14 years old and last year was in Class 6 in Secondary School. She has not yet enrolled for this years Class 7 because she cannot get the money. Her stark alternatives now are to marry or find work. She has no parents but lives with a neighbour who took her in because she herself has no children. This lady is only a kitchen servant and can barely provide for them both.
Today Akhi took Rosey to her home – a bunch of shacks where she and five other families live. It is poor even by the lowest slum standards.
We decided today to include Akhi in our schools sponsorship scheme. The Pan Asian Women’s Association has given us funding to assist some older girls like Akhi stay in school.
The sun is about to shine again for Akhi. We are looking forward to giving her the news.
